CHRAJ Cautions Against Misuse of Freedom

CHRAJ Cautions Against Misuse of Freedom

The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has issued a warning against the misuse of individual freedoms, stressing that such actions are unlawful and may result in criminal prosecution.

In an interview with Nana Asabea on Plan B FM’s Nyansapɔ Fie programme, John Ato Breboh, Deputy Chief Investigator at the Tema Sub-Regional Office of CHRAJ, emphasised that abusing one’s freedom at the expense of others is unacceptable and contrary to the law.

“If individuals were arrested and jailed for abusing their freedoms against others, it would serve as a deterrent to others,” Breboh stated.

He referenced the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), as amended, which criminalises acts such as declaring, accusing, naming, or labelling individuals as witches, noting that anyone engaging in such behaviour would be acting in contravention of the law.

Breboh’s warning underscores the importance of balancing individual rights with respect for the rights and dignity of others. By enforcing laws that protect human rights, CHRAJ seeks to promote a society in which individuals can enjoy their freedoms without infringing on those of others.
