Jemaima Amoako, Health Promotion Officer at Tema Urban Hospital, has issued urgent warning to the general public to take immediate action in combating cholera, as between 1.3 and 4 million people are at risk.
Speaking to Nana Asabea on Plan B FM’s Nyansapɔ Fie show, she emphasized that cholera claims 143,000 lives annually, globally. “Cholera is caused by bacteria, which causes diarrhea and vomiting. It’s spread through consuming contaminated food and water,” she revealed.
“To prevent the spread, people must always practice thorough hand washing with soap, especially when coming into contact with affected individuals.”
She also stressed the importance of seeking immediate medical attention if symptoms occur and adopting a healthy lifestyle to prevent infection.
“It is also recommended to prepare appropriate remedies at home to help alleviate the effects of cholera,” she added.
