Chaos in Ashaiman over 24-Hour Economy market; MCE reacts

Chaos in Ashaiman over 24-Hour Economy market; MCE reacts
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Ashaiman Market is one of the busiest markets in the Tema Region and Ghana as a whole. Even before the introduction of the 24-hour economy by the incumbent government under the leadership of His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, the Ashaiman Market was already known for its vibrant overnight trading activities.

It has come to public attention that the market is set to be redeveloped as part of the government’s 24-hour economy agenda. Speaking to Ohene Kinnah on Plan B FM’s Ebanosen programme on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Ashaiman, Hon. Freeman Tsekpo, explained that the unrest stems from a misunderstanding between the traditional elders of Ashaiman and the Municipal Assembly.

According to Hon. Tsekpo, he held a town hall meeting with the elders and market women sometime in November last year, during which he assured them that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government intends to rebuild and upgrade the market into a modern 24-hour economy facility in 2026. However, the elders contend that they were not adequately consulted on when and how the project would commence.

Hon. Tsekpo further noted that the project falls under the auspices of the Local Government Ministry, stating, “I cannot say whether it will commence today or tomorrow.”

The MCE assured the people of Ashaiman and the traditional authorities that the Assembly would re-engage all stakeholders to address their concerns and agree on a temporary relocation site to pave the way for construction of the new market.

He concluded that “effective stakeholder engagement and leadership involvement will help ease tensions and ensure a better Ashaiman.”
