Cease Using ‘Professor’ Title – GTEC Directs Ambulance Service CEO

Cease Using ‘Professor’ Title – GTEC Directs Ambulance Service CEO
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has directed the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana National Ambulance Service, Dr. Nuhu Zakaria, to desist from using the academic title “Professor.”

The directive, issued in a statement dated July 4 and signed by GTEC Director-General, Prof. Ahmed Abdulai Jinapor, is part of the Commission’s ongoing efforts to curb the misuse of academic titles in Ghana.

According to GTEC, there is no verifiable evidence indicating that Dr. Zakaria has ever held a substantive academic position that justifies the use of the professorial title.

“Accordingly, while you may continue to use the professional title Medical Doctor (MD), the use of the title Professor is not appropriate. In line with GTEC’s mandate to uphold academic standards and safeguard the integrity of Ghana’s higher education system, you are hereby directed to cease using the title “Professor” in all institutional, professional, and public communications.”

The Commission has also informed Dr. Zakaria’s employer—the Ministry of Health—through its Chief Director, to ensure the directive is enforced.

GTEC further warned that non-compliance may attract legal consequences.

“The Commission expects your full compliance. Please be advised that failure to adhere to this directive may result in legal action,” the statement stated.

This move comes as part of a broader crackdown by GTEC on the misuse of academic credentials by public figures and professionals across the country.
