CAF postpones 2025 CHAN championship from February to August

Africa’s football governing body, CAF, has announced the postponement of the 2024 African Nations Champions (CHAN) that was scheduled to take place this year from February 1 to February 28 to August.

The event, originally billed to commence in 2024, had to be moved to 2025 due to the lingering effects of the COVID pandemic and a restructured CAF football calendar.

This year’s CHAN will be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda with 16 countries set to participate in the continental championship that is eligible to players who compete in their respective countries’ football leagues.

However, a statement released by CAF on Tuesday, January 14 stated that the tournament had to be postponed from February to August due to concerns over infrastructure and facilities in the host nations.

CAF President, Patrice Motsepe, addressed the issue in the statement by expressing confidence in the host nations’ ability to host a successful tournament following the commencement date review.

Despite the change in start date, the draw for the competition will go as planned on Wednesday, January 15 in Nairobi Kenya at 17:00 GMT.

Ghana failed to qualify to compete in the tournament after losing to Nigeria. Scroll down to read the full statement of the 2025 CHAN start date’s postponement. (Click highlighted text to read full story)
