Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ebenezer Tetteh, Eastern Regional Police Public Affairs Officer has said 49 passengers onboard an O.A Zhontong bus with the registration AS 8249-19 escaped death when as the bus caught fire at Anyinase in the Birim North District

The bus he said was heading to Accra from Tumu in the Upper West Region when the suspected driver, Richmond Anim, aged 52, detected smoke emerging from the rear part of the bus on reaching the said area on the Kumasi–Accra highway.

DSP Tetteh told the Ghana News Agency in an interview that the driver, Anim, parked the bus on the shoulder of the road and the passengers alighted before the fire on the bus intensified.

The Public Relations Officer of the Eastern Regional Ghana National Fire Service, Assistant Divisional Officer I, Ignatius K Baidoo said according to a preliminary investigation, the incident, which occurred on Saturday morning, was suspected to have been caused by a flat wheel.

He indicated that the driver may have continued driving with the flat wheel with the hope of getting to a vulcanizing shop to repair the wheel.

However, he said the rims generated sparks of fire, which resulted in the fire outbreak, but added investigations were still ongoing.
