Building a hospital and a new chamber for MPs is not Ghana’s priority – Mello fires back

Building a hospital and a new chamber for MPs is not Ghana’s priority – Mello fires back

A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communications team in the Ashaiman Constituency of the Greater Accra Region, Francis Kwasi Badu Mello, has criticized Minority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin for proposing the construction of a hospital for Members of Parliament (MPs) and a new parliamentary chamber.

Mello expressed his disappointment in Afenyo-Markin, arguing that such proposals do not align with the priorities of ordinary Ghanaians.

Speaking during a panel discussion on Plan B FM’s Nkosuo Nsem show on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, hosted by Obidehyie Kofi Sekyi, Mello stated that building a dedicated hospital for MPs is not what the country needs at the moment.

“It is not a priority for Ghanaians to build a separate hospital for MPs,” he said.

He further argued that the NDC, as a political party, is more focused on national development compared to the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“The NDC prioritizes Ghana’s development more than the NPP, and that is what sets us apart,” he stated.

Mello criticized the NPP for what he described as reckless expenditure, accusing the government of mismanaging resources without Afenyo-Markin ever demanding a hospital for MPs. However, now that the NDC is attempting to fix the country’s problems, the Minority Leader is suddenly making such a proposal.

“Why didn’t Afenyo-Markin propose this when his government was in power? The NPP wasted $58 million just to dig what became the world’s most expensive hole—not to mention the resources wasted on the failed Sky Train project and the Pwalugu Dam,” he added.

Mello further questioned Afenyo-Markin’s leadership in Parliament, suggesting that he has not demonstrated seriousness since assuming his role.
