Betty Maame Ackon, a dedicated Public Health Nurse at the Tema Urban Hospital, has highlighted the significance of breastfeeding in fostering a strong bond between babies and their parents.
Speaking to host Nana Asabea on Plan B FM’s Nyansapɔ Fie show, she outlined the benefits of breastfeeding, including enhancing the baby’s immune system, promoting bonding, and reducing the risk of breast and other cancers.
Betty Maame Ackon recommends that breastfeeding should commence within 30 minutes of birth and occur at least 10 times daily.
She also noted that breastfeeding helps the uterus return to its pre-pregnancy shape and can serve as a natural form of family planning.
Jemima Amoako, a Health Promotion Officer at the Tema Urban Hospital, concurred with Betty’s views, advocating for exclusive breastfeeding and cautioning against introducing tinned or canned foods to infants due to the potential risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Jemima also added that as a working-class mother, expressing breast milk and storing it in a breast milk bank can be a viable option, noting that breast milk can be safely stored frozen for about 6 months without spoiling, allowing working mothers to provide their babies with the benefits of breast milk even when they are not physically present.
Both health professionals emphasised the importance of proper nutrition for infants and the benefits of breastfeeding in promoting healthy growth and development.
