Breast cancer survivor recounts difficult journey to recovery

Breast cancer survivor recounts difficult journey to recovery

Breast cancer survivor Madam Bridget Emefa Van-Johnson has shared her difficult journey with the disease, urging women to undergo regular screening and seek medical attention when they notice unusual changes in their bodies.

Speaking during the launch of the International Maritime Hospital’s (IMAH) 2026 Pink October campaign in Tema Community 3, Madam Van-Johnson recounted the emotional and physical challenges she experienced during her treatment.

She said her treatment involved undergoing six sessions of chemotherapy as part of the process before she eventually underwent surgery.

Madam Van-Johnson described the period as one of the most difficult moments of her life, saying she at some point considered abandoning the treatment and surgery.

She, however, said the constant encouragement and support from her family helped her remain hopeful and continue with the treatment.

According to her, the chemotherapy came with several difficult side effects, including allergies and hair loss.

She said the experience of losing her hair was particularly distressing, forcing her to shave off the remaining hair after it became soft and started falling out.

Madam Van-Johnson said she became physically weak and emotionally traumatised during the treatment but remained determined to overcome the disease.

She expressed gratitude to the medical team that treated her, particularly for the successful surgery, saying she is now doing well.

Reflecting on her experience, she advised women not to ignore changes in their bodies or wait until they feel seriously ill before seeking medical attention.

She encouraged women to undergo regular breast screening and pay attention to possible warning signs.

Madam Van-Johnson stressed that early detection could help patients access treatment promptly and improve their chances of recovery.

Her story formed part of activities marking IMAH’s 2026 Pink October campaign, which is being held under the theme “Early Action, Better Outcomes.”
