The 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) school selection process officially begins today, Tuesday, May 27, and will conclude on Friday, June 6, according to the Free SHS (FSHS) Secretariat.

At a press briefing announcing the start of the exercise, Sena Okity-Duah, Coordinator of the FSHS Secretariat, outlined new guidelines aimed at ensuring a smooth and informed selection process.

Teams from both the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Service and the FSHS Secretariat will be deployed nationwide to educate students, parents, and school staff on the updated procedures.

Key Highlights of the New Guidelines:

  • Candidates must select seven schools: five main choices and two alternatives, ranked by preference.

  • Boarding school requirement: At least three of the five main choices must be boarding schools.

  • Category limits:

    • Only one Category A school may be selected.

    • A maximum of two schools from Category B is allowed.

    • While Category C schools can be chosen freely, candidates cannot select all five main options from this category.

  • TVET aspirants must pick five institutions from Categories A, B, or C, choosing either boarding or day options.

  • Students targeting careers in engineering, medicine, or space science are urged to select STEM-focused schools across categories.

  • Once placed, school selections cannot be changed.

A key point emphasized by the FSHS Secretariat is the need for parental involvement. No selection form will be accepted without a parent’s or guardian’s signature. Additionally, parents are advised to retain a copy of the completed form for reference.

This nationwide exercise is crucial for shaping the academic futures of BECE candidates, and strict adherence to the new rules is essential to avoid disqualification or placement issues.
