The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced that this year ban on drumming, noise making will commence on Monday, May 10, 2021.
This development is part of preparation towards the annual Homowo Festival of the Ga’s.
The ban will last for a period of one month which ends on June 10, 2021.
In the interest of peace, harmony and national security, the Assembly has outlined the following guidelines.
An AMA statement announcing the ban further noted that, during the period of the ban, the usual form of worship for Christians and Moslems should be confined to the premises of churches/mosques and noise levels should be minimised to the barest limits.
It further pointed out that, in addition, all Covid-19 Protocols (i.e. washing of hands under running water with soap, the use of hand sanitisers, the wearing of nose masks and physical distancing) should be strictly adhered to.
Continuing with other guidelines, the statement mentioned that the usual form of worship for both Christians and Muslims should be confined to the premises of churches/mosques and noise levels should be minimised to the barest limits.
In addition, all Covid-19 Protocols (i.e. washing of hands under running water with soap, the use of hand sanitisers, the wearing of nose masks and physical distancing) should be strictly adhered to.
Continuing, the state mentioned other that
religious bodies and the traditional authorities are advised to show respect to one another and restrain their followers from making derogatory and inflammatory remarks about the beliefs and practices of one another.
It also announced that the positioning of loudspeakers outside the premises of churches, mosques and pubs is banned to ensure a smooth observationof the festival.
Touching on outdoor religious activities, the statement notes that roadside evangelists are also to cease their activities during the aforementioned period. It stated that part from an identifiable task force that consists of AMA personnel, the Ghana Police Service and representatives of the Traditional Councils with tags, no other person or group of persons should be seen or found enforcing the abatement of noise in the metropolis.
Concluding the statement urged all indigenes, towns and villages under the jurisdiction of the Ga Traditional Area to cooperate and comply with the guidelines accordingly during the period of the ban.
