Ghanaian movie actor, John Dumelo has failed in his quest to represent the people of Ayawaso West Wuogon as their Member of Parliament (MP) in the Monday, December 7, 2020 after he was beaten by incumbent MP, Madam Lydia Seyram Alhassan.
Announcing Madam Alhassan of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the winner of the Parliamentary election in the constituency, Electoral Commission (EC) officials mentioned that the incumbent MP won with 39,851 votes of the polls casted.
Mr John Dumelo who had earlier assured his supporters of victory in the keenly contested election polled 37,778 votes.
Prior to the announcement by the EC, John Dumelo speaking to a section of the media during his tour of some of the polling stations, encouraged his supporters to ignore word making round that he had lost the election to Madam Lydia Seyram Alhassan.
Continuing he pointed out that internal projections made by his party seem to suggest that he was leading and was more likely to win the polls for the NDC.
Madam Alhassan throughout her campaign had always insisted she would win the polls with about 60% of the votes expected to be casted in the area.
She pointed out that her constituents are appreciative of the work she has done and was therefore hopeful of victory in the polls adding that the goods of the government under the leadership of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo would further solidify her victory.
Madam Lydia Alhassan replaced her late husband, Emmanuel Boakye Agyarko in January 2019. She contested and won the parliamentary seat for the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency with 68.80% of the valid votes while the NDC then candidates, Kwasi Delali Brempong polled 30.52%. The Progressive People’s Party (PPP), William Kofi Dowokpor with Clement Boadi of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) polling 0.58% and0.10 % respectively.
