Atebubu: Suspected notorious armed robber shot dead by police

A suspected notorious armed robber has been shot dead by the police at Atebubu in the Bono East Region.

The police have identified him as Mahamadu Gariba Kirror, who, according to the police, was the leader of the robbery gang of six, that attacked and killed a mini bus driver and robbed passengers of their belongings in Jamuary 2025 in the Atebubu area.

Gariba was arrested by the police on Saturday, [January 31, 2026] at 10:30am based on intelligence.

After an initial interrogation, he offered to lead the police to arrest his other gang members.

But according to a police situational report (SITREP) seen by Graphic Online, the suspect, who was leading a police team to effect the arrest of his other accomplices, attempted to flee and he was shot by the police on Sunday [February 1, 2026] at 7:45pm .

“When the team got closer to the hideout of the accomplices, the suspect advised police to use a footpath which, leads to the said location.

However, suspect Mahamadu Gariba Kirror immediately took to his heels and in an attempt to enter a nearby forest and escape. The team fired shots to maim him where he sustained gunshots injuries. He was rushed to the Atebubu Government Hospital for medical attention but was pronounced dead by the medical officer on duty,” the police situational indicated.

The police indicated that a search conducted on him revealed exhibits namely a locally manufactured pistol, two live BB cartridges, a Samsung Galaxy AO7mobile phone, two keypad mobile phones and a talisman.

Investigations, it said, established that the Samsung AO7 belonged to one Nafisa Owusu Haruna, a resident of Yeji and a victim of the December 2025 robbery ked by the suspect along the Atebubu to Yeji highway..

“That during the robbery, the driver in charge of the mini van with registration No. AS-6444-14 conveying passengers along the stretch was shot including victim Nafisa was shot and killed by the robbers.

“On interrogation suspect Kirror admitted that he and his other accomplices shot and killed the driver in charge of the mini van and succeeded in robbing the passengers on board,” it said.

The report said the suspect mentioned Umaru, Issifu, Furgur, Ibrahim, Shaibu and Yelow as his accomplices.

“On 01/02/2026, at 1945 hours, suspect Kirror led the team to a nearby bush in the Atebubu municipality in order to apprehend his accomplices.
