Hon. Bernard Owusu Bempah, Assemblyman for Gyatabu Electoral Area and Chairman of Tema West Zonal Council, stated that districts are not responsible for desilting gutters in front of people’s houses. Therefore, residents who fail to sanitize their gutters may face prosecution, fines, or prison custody if their gutters cause destruction during rainfall.
During his interview with Nana Asabea on Plan B FM’s Nyansapɔ Fie show, Hon. Bempah emphasized the importance of gutter maintenance. He stressed that districts are taking proactive measures to prevent flooding, which can lead to devastating consequences like destruction, financial losses, and even loss of life.
He urged residents to take responsibility for regularly desilting their gutters to avoid legal consequences, including prosecution, fines, and potentially even prison custody. By doing so, residents can contribute to creating a safer and more resilient community.
Additionally, Hon. Bempah noted that the land behind residential buildings is not privately owned. As such, residents must obtain permission from the relevant district authorities before undertaking any construction or development projects. Failure to properly maintain and weed one’s surroundings is a serious violation and may be considered a criminal offense. Moreover, residents are responsible for ensuring the proper care and maintenance of district-owned properties, as any damage or neglect may result in legal action.
