Nii Annang Adjor, the Regent of the Ashaiman Divisional Council has expressed worry over a potential tension that could hit his area over who becomes the next Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly (ASHMA)
Information making round is that a lot of the youth of the area especially members of the ruling party, New Patriotic Party (NPP) have vowed to resist the re-nomination of Mr. Albert Boakye Okyere with the explanation that his leadership has not yielded any benefit for the area.
In an interview with Tema base Plan-B FM, the Regent, Nii Adjor noted that information available to him indicates that a number of youth groups are requesting for a change in the leadership of ASHMA and warn that nothing short of that could be chaotic.
In line with avoiding what he describe as potential trouble, he pleaded with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to appoint a grassroots person who understands the plight of the people of Ashaiman and what their needs are.
He continued that he has heard of threats from the youth wings, and added what is worrying is the fact that youth are agitating against the re-nomination of the incumbent MCE, Albert Okyere. “As a young man and as a chief, I think Ashaiman has come a long way. If Ashaiman is a son and is growing, he has to calm down and make sure he chooses his future wisely. So I am using this opportunity to tell our leaders that I don’t want anything to happen to Ashaiman,” Nii Adjor remarked.
Speaking about the seriousness of the agitation of the people, Nii Annang Adjor stated that it is coming from the youth within the NPP as well as some members of the public who have said that Mr. Okyere has been nominated on two separate times to serve as the area’s MCE and therefore do not see why he has to be re-nominated as if to suggest that the area has no competent person to serve in that position.
“This is the reason I am appealing to the President to consider some of these issues in choosing who becomes the next MCE. If care is not taken and things done contrary to the expectation of the youth it will lead to chaotic situation in the area,” the Ashaiman regent said.
In a related development, Naa Amui, the queen mother of the Ashaiman Divisional Council has added her voice to those calling for a change in the leadership of ASHMA.
According to her the (MCE) position is not for one person and added that it has to be rotated. “Even within the NPP, there is division and there is tension because not all of them are in favour of the incumbent. We are appealing that we do not want any tension or chaos in the town,” she stated.
Continuing, she mentioned that similar thing happened some time ago where some youth of the area burnt lorry tyres and quickly added that when such incidents happens it is women and children who become vulnerable.
She pleaded with the President to ensure that the right thing be done because residents of Ashaiman do not want anyone to come and disturb their peace in the name of choosing the area’s next MCE.
Plan-B FM gathered that some NPP coordinators and sympathizers months ago threatened to resist the re-nomination of the current MCE, Albert Boakye Okyere and promised to hit the streets should that happen.
Explaining the reason behind their threat, they intimated that the MCE has underperformed and therefore there was the need to have a new face to lead government’s agenda in the area threatening to demonstrate against any such decision.
