Asamankese: 42 year old taxi driver from Kade jailed 20 years

A 42-year-old Taxi Driver from Kade in the Eastern Region, Kwabena Nyame has been sentenced to 20 years imprisonment in hard labour by the Asamankese Circuit Court Presided Over by His Honour Abass Abubakari Adams for robbery.

Kwabena Nyame, the accused, pleaded guilty to two counts and was giving ten years each for the counts, both to run concurrently.

On 14/03/2024, Kwabena Nyame and one Shawfiw Ibrahim, 29 years old illegal miner went to Goil Filling Station at Subi, near Kade to Rob them which is a criminal offence contrary to section 23(1) of the Criminal offence Act 1960(Act 29) and section 149 of the Criminal offence Act 1960.

For the second count, charge sheet presented to the Court indicated that it was committed on 14/04/2024 at Kade by both the accused Persons.

Detective Chief Inspector Wisdom Banson told the court that Victim kwaku Gyima is a businessman and reside at Kade.

He said in the month of March, 2024, the accused Persons visited their friend one Abass Muftar who a witness in this case at the Goil Filling Station, Subi where he was on duty as the night watchman.

At the said filling station, the accused Persons disclosed to Abass Muftar that they have already agreed to rob the victim and further persuaded Abass Muftar to partner them with the pump action gun assigned to him to provide security at his post for the robbery but he refused.

The continued to convinced him to give them the gun if he is unwilling to join them for their intended robbery and again, Abass declined so they later stopped visiting him.

On 28/04/2024 about 10:30am Kwabena Nyame transported some passengers to Otumi with his Mazda Demio taxi cab with registration No.GS 6954-17 and alighted the last passenger at the Otumi funeral grounds.

At the funeral grounds, Kwabena Nyame saw one Edward Ampomah and Francis Abina who are witnesses in this case and were armed with pump action guns and dressed in traditional native regalia who exchanged contacts with the accused Person.

On the same day at about 3:30pm Kwabena Nyame invited the two from Otumi to Kade where he led them to Adompo a suburb of Kade and showed them the victim’s house where they have planned to rob and thereafter left the scene.

Unfortunately for Kwabena Nyame, his accomplices were not actually interested in the robbery act but wanted him and his accomplices to be arrested countermanded and leaked the information to police.

The witnesses then led police to Adompo, Kade and showed the house where the robbery would be taken place so in order to get the accused persons arrested police gave them the go ahead to stage the robbery but not to hurt anyone as police laid ambush to get the main culprits arrested.

About 9:00pm, the accused Persons agreed to meet the witnesses Francis Abina and Edward Amponsah at
Newman School Junction where after finalizing the planned operation moved to the victim’s house.

Upon arrival in the house, they attacked the victim who was sitting in front of his house by firing on air to put him in fear and forcibly took his phone from him and in the process the police pounced on them and with the assistance of the witnesses arrested Kwabena Nyame whilst Shafiw Ibrahim managed to escape from the crime scene.

When Kwabena Nyame was searched, a blue colored face mask and a jack knife were retrieved from his pockets. Ibrahim was pursued to his hide out at Star Oil Filling station at Kade where he was arrested.

After closed of investigation the accused persons were charged with the offences.
