The Abesim community was alarmed by the death of a twenty-one (21) year old Solomon Amoh in the Nsasana River that runs through the township. The young man according to the parents had just graduated from Senior High School and was working with the Feeder Roads Department on a drainage project in his town.
Solomon per eyewitnesses account was done cleaning up construction tools after the day’s work and had walked down the river under the storm bridge to wash down. He slipped into the water but some young people who stood on the banks warned him not to go near the deepest section.
Just after he responded, Solomon was heard splashing water and gasping for air. Those at the banks called for help and one Yaw Nso rushed to his rescue. He tried several times but couldn’t get a hold of Solomon.
According to Yaw Nso, he got one other man to help run a rope through the waters but they were confronted by some crocodiles which compelled them to stop the search. He mentioned that it was strange that Solomon couldn’t be saved at that critical moment.
“The water is deep. I managed to rescue him but for someone who is drowning the aggression could also harm the rescuer. He went down into the water again, and I dived right after him but he wasn’t there. I search and even got a rope to help tie him up so we could pull him out of the water but anytime we go into the water there were these three crocodiles that kept surfacing. So we stopped.”
The father of the victim, Amoh Kwesi was devastated by the news. He shared that his last moment with the sun was in the afternoon of yesterday. He indicated that he walked past the area where the son was working in the evening and for about an hour later was called to attend to an emergency about his son.
Since yesterday when the accident occurred, the body wasn’t found. The Police and the Fire Service have all been to the place but to no avail. Early this morning, the Chief and elders of Abesim stormed the river and performed some rituals hoping to have the body released by the river gods.
A few minutes after the ritual, the lifeless body of Solomon Amoh surfaced. Eyewitnesses couldn’t bear the scene and started weeping. The young man is gone.
They wrapped black polythene around the body and dumped it into the truck of a tricycle, so they could deposit it a the local morgue.
