Tensions have escalated at Ejura as angry youth allegedly set a police station and several police vehicles ablaze.

The death of a 26-year-old man, Shaibu Masawudu ignited unrest in Ejura, resulting in the burning of the District Police Command, vehicles, and private properties.

Masawudu, who had been detained by the police on allegations of phone theft, died at the Ejura Government Hospital after complaining of stomach pain and vomiting while in custody.

The police did not inform his family of his death and instead transported his body to Mampong for an autopsy.

The family claims that the police later abandoned the body in the bush.

The youth in Ejura, angered by the police’s actions, demanded answers and subsequently set the police station and other properties on fire.

Louisa Benon, the Coordinating Director at the Ejura-Sekyedumase Municipal Assembly, visited the scene and called for calm.

In response to the chaos, military officers were deployed to maintain order. However, they allegedly retaliated by setting ablaze motorbikes belonging to the youth and other passers-by.

Relatives of the deceased are demanding justice, with Abdul Haqq Ibrahim, a family member, calling on the government to intervene. The youth have denied claims that they freed suspects who were in custody.

An autopsy is being conducted to determine the actual cause of Masawudu’s death.
