Amend Constitution to Boost Anti-Corruption Fight – CEO, FreeMinds Communication Ltd

Amend Constitution to Boost Anti-Corruption Fight – CEO, FreeMinds Communication Ltd
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Mrs Comfort Aniagyei, CEO of FreeMinds Communication and shareholder of GhanaMade Stores, has called for a constitutional amendment to Article 88 Clause 5 to bolster the fight against corruption.

Speaking at the Tema Metro-Security Services Constitution Quiz Competition, organised by the National Commission for Civic Education, which she chaired, Mrs Aniagyei argued that the current framework hinders effective prosecution of corruption cases.

She cited undue influences stemming from the Attorney General’s dual role as an MP, presidential interference, and the involvement of traditional and religious leaders in shielding accused individuals. Mrs Aniagyei also highlighted the issue of financiers of political parties being “untouchable” and the pervasive bribery that fuels corruption.

“We want to expressly empower individuals with evidence to go to court on behalf of the state to prosecute such persons,” Mrs Aniagyei stressed, advocating for a framework that enables citizens to take action against corruption, promoting accountability and transparency.

Furthermore, she urged complementary measures, including:

– Scrapping filing fees and court charges
– Government-provided legal aid and pro bono legal advice and support
– A whistleblower reward system, where individuals who take action on corruption cases receive 20-30% of recovered funds

Notably, Mrs Aniagyei has already submitted her proposal to the Constitution Review Committee and is awaiting their invitation.
