The death toll following the collapse of the church building at Akyem Batabi in the eastern area of the Asene-Manso-Akroso district has risen to six, with 15 rescued.

The uncompleted church building whose construction began ten years ago as a branch of the Church of Prosperity, founded by Akoa Isaac, is still believed to have trapped some 40 worshippers including the kids.

The building suddenly collapsed yesterday, October 20, 2020 at about 2:40pm.

“After fasting and prayers, we heard parts of the church go down”, according to a survivor who prefered to remain anonymous.

“We were living in the church building when we were resting. We had more than 40 people in the house, so we began to run away, but others were stuck.”

A joint rescue team made up of officials of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), Ghana Police, Ghana Ambulance Service with reinforcement team from the Eastern Regional Capital, Koforidua and the Ghana Army are currently at the scene with excavators continuing with the rescue Operation since yesterday.
