Four people have been confirmed dead at the St. Dominic Catholic Hospital in Akwatia, following a series of accidents that marred celebrations after Tuesday’s by-election in the Eastern Region.

The by-election was held on September 2, 2025, after the passing of the area’s Member of Parliament, Ernest Yaw Kumi. Lawyer Bernard Bediako of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) emerged victorious over Solomon Asumadu of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Soon after the Electoral Commission declared the results, jubilant youth poured onto the streets in celebration. While some danced to loud music, others performed risky stunts with motorcycles and cars.

One eyewitness, Michael Arthur, told reporters that his uncle, 44-year-old Thomas Nkrumah, sustained critical injuries after another motorbike crashed into him while he was standing upright on a moving motorcycle. Nkrumah was rushed to St. Dominic Hospital later succumbed to his injuries. The other rider was treated at a facility in Takorase.

A medical source at St. Dominic confirmed that at least four people had already died in separate accidents linked to the celebrations, while several others continued to report to the hospital with injuries.

The source also recalled that a man riding pillion on a motorbike on Monday, September 1, had smashed his head on the road in Akwatia township and died instantly. It remains unclear if he was included in the four deaths recorded at the hospital.

Despite the tragedy, the MP-elect, Bernard Bediako, and his constituency chairman were later seen parading the streets in an open-top vehicle to thank jubilant supporters
