Ghana’s sitting President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) been re-elected as announced by the Chairperson of Electoral Commission (EC) and Returning Officer of the December 7 Presidential elections, Mrs Jean Adukwei Mensa.
The EC Chair indicated that Nana Akufo-Addo polled 6,730,413 votes representing 51.595 per cent to topple his main contender John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) who polled 6,214,889 votes representing 47.366 per cent of valid votes cast.
Following 2012 and 2016, this becomes the third time the two leaders have met in elections with Nana Akufo-Addo coming out on top on two occasions, 2016 and 2020.
John Mahama secured victory in the 2012 Presidential election which was subsequently challenged by Nana Akufo-Addo in the Supreme Court of Ghana with the apex court upholding John Mahama’s win in August 2013. John Mahama however failed to secure a second-term in office after he was blown out by Nana Akufo-Addo by over a million votes.
