Akim Swedru MP Suggests Compulsory Redundancy Program To Reduce Burden On Gov’t Payroll

Member of Parliament for Akim Swedru Kennedy Osei Nyarko has advised the Government of Ghana to a compulsory redundancy programme to lay off workers from the public sector.

According to him, this will save the country some amount of money and also reduce the burden of spending 60% of the country’s revenue on remunerations.

He believes that the monies that will be saved as a result of the redundancy can be put into entrepreneurship programmes and also provide funding for young enterprising businesses.

Kennedy Osei Nyarko who made this known in a post shared on his social media indicated that this is one of the best ways to prevent the youth from focusing on the government to be employed after school.

Government is currently spending 60% of its entire revenues in paying the remunerations of just 650,000 public sector workers out of the 30 million population.

This trajectory is not sustainable and should be changed or reversed by cutting down the wage bill and channeling those monies that will be save in supporting young entrepreneurs or graduates profitable business ideas to set up their own businesses.

I will not be surprised that in some years to come the country will be spending its entire revenues in paying public sector workers with nothing left.

If I am giving the opportunity to make a lasting recommendation to Government, I will advise the government to enter into a compulsory redundancy program to lay off at least half of the current public sector workers and use those monies that will be saved to compensate them by setting them up to run their own businesses.

This practical approach will free the government wage bill of about GHc17 billion annually. This 17 billion can be put in an entrepreneurship programs or funding to support young entrepreneurs and individuals with bankable businesses to run their own companies without depending on government for jobs.

Meanwhile, the Finance Minister has encouraged the youth to desist from depending on government for jobs.

According to him, the government is currently burdened with spending 60% of revenue generated on paying salaries; a move he deems not sustainable and not in the best interest of the country.
