The Tema Regional chapter of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) has held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on the theme “Creating a Conducive Business Environment for Industrial Competitiveness: 24-Hour Economy in Perspective” on Tuesday, September 30, 2025.
The event brought together a cross-section of AGI members in Tema, alongside representatives from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Textiles Ghana Limited, Tema Development Corporation (TDC), and other key stakeholders.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Eddie Akwetey, Chairman of AGI Tema, said the association has engaged the new Customs Commander in Tema to resolve long-standing customs-related challenges affecting industries. He urged members to take their subscriptions seriously, stressing that the funds are critical for AGI’s advocacy efforts on behalf of its members.
Dr. Akwetey also emphasized the importance of the Ningo Prampram agenda, initiated in 2023, which seeks to bring industries within the district assembly into the AGI fold. He noted that as the 24-hour economy policy rolls out, it will be crucial for new members to join in order to access land and expand operations.
In his remarks, AGI Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Seth Twum-Akwaboah, assured members that the association is working closely with government to stabilize the macroeconomic environment. He highlighted challenges with exchange rate volatility, inflation, and tax policies, which he said continue to affect industrial growth and exports.
He revealed that discussions are underway with government to review Ghana’s VAT system to ease the financial burden on industries. Mr. Twum-Akwaboah further disclosed that AGI is introducing mentorship programmes to support smaller companies and help them scale up operations.
On his part, Mr. Samuel Oteng, Regional Director of the EPA for Greater Accra East (Tema), reminded companies to display their permits publicly and comply with environmental regulations to avoid sanctions. He cautioned industries against harmful emissions and noted that the EPA has introduced an air quality code system to inform the public about pollution levels via Http-//aqi.gh.org
He also encouraged the wearing of masks on days when air quality is poor.
A representative from the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA), speaking on behalf of the Mayor of Tema, called on industries to rally behind the government’s 24-hour economy policy. She announced that plans are underway to improve street lighting in the metropolis and pledged to prioritize modern infrastructure development for the people of Tema.
The AGM served as a platform for industry leaders, regulators, and policymakers to deliberate on the opportunities and challenges of enhancing industrial competitiveness within the evolving 24-hour economy framework.
