Local Government expert, Amon Kotei is of the view that the government should have prioritized upgrading existing hospitals to fortify the delivery of health services to individuals with various health challenges rather spending money to build new ones.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as part of measures to mitigate the impact of the health crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, will today Tuesday, August 17, 2021, break grounds for the commencement of the construction of hospitals under the government’s Agenda 111 initiative.
The project is part of a grand vision for Ghana’s healthcare sector by the Akufo-Addo administration, the realization of which will ensure that 101 outstanding districts will be provided with hospitals in addition to 10 selected regional and specialized hospitals.
Speaking on Plan B FM ‘Nkosuo Nsem’ with Ohene Addo, Mr. Kotei criticised the decision to construct new facilities while existing and ongoing projects have stalled.
“What worries me is the huge amount of money we are spending on this project whiles we have existing and ongoing hospital projects that have stalled and also in a deplorable state that needs funding to be able to function properly. This is where some budget decisions are more of political intent than the benefit the people would derive from it, and it is affecting us as a people,” he said.
He also indicated that, the government has weaken the District Assemblies thereby making them useless. He insisted the agenda 111 project should have been executed by the District Assemblies rather than the Central government.
