Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe and former Minister for Education, has declared his intention to contest for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential slot ahead of the 2028 general elections.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, June 18, Dr. Adutwum formally announced his decision, making it clear he would join the race once nominations are officially opened by the party.

“With humility, conviction, and a resolute heart, I, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, declare my intent to run for the flagbearership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), should nominations be officially opened by the party,” he wrote.

Widely recognized for his contributions to education reform during his tenure as minister, Dr. Adutwum now joins a growing list of senior NPP figures openly expressing interest in leading the party into the next presidential election.

His declaration comes at a time when Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia — the party’s 2024 flagbearer — is considered a leading contender, with other high-profile personalities like Kennedy Agyapong and Bryan Acheampong also expected to enter the race.

Dr. Adutwum’s announcement closely follows the NPP’s confirmation of January 31, 2026, as the official date for its presidential primary — a timeline set by the party’s National Council after recommendations from the constitutional review committee.

With the date now on the calendar, the race to lead the NPP into the 2028 elections is officially taking shape.
