Some parts of the Greater Accra Region will experience temporary power interruptions this weekend as authorities undertake restoration and maintenance works on the damaged Tema–Achimota 161kV transmission line.
The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, said the planned shutdowns would last for only a few hours and were necessary to enable engineers to safely carry out the restoration works.
The transmission line was damaged near Ashaiman Middle East after a fuel tanker undergoing welding work beneath the line exploded.
The explosion reportedly propelled a section of the tanker more than 300 metres into one of the transmission towers, compromising its structural integrity.
Dr Jinapor said the temporary interruptions in power supply were unavoidable, as the damaged infrastructure required urgent attention to restore the stability and reliability of the transmission system.
He appealed to residents and businesses likely to be affected to bear with the authorities while the maintenance and restoration works are carried out.
“These interruptions will be necessary to facilitate the works and ensure the safety and reliability of the transmission system,” he said.
The Minister also cautioned the public against entering protected transmission corridors or undertaking unauthorised activities around high-voltage infrastructure.
He stressed that encroachment and activities such as welding or construction within transmission corridors could pose serious risks to lives and critical power infrastructure.
