Samuel Boateng a political analyst has urged the government to abolish some taxes on businesses to bring some level of relief to Ghanaians.
Speaking on Plan B FM’s morning show NKOSUONSEM hosted by Obidehye Kofi Sekyi, Mr. Boateng stressed that the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy) and COVID-19 Levy should have been abolished by now because President Akufo Addo announced that, COVID-19 is no more, so why are we still paying for something that does not exist.
He added that the E-levy was widely spoken against by Ghanaians since its introduction and has missed its targeted amount several times since its inception should have occurred to the president that his people are not comfortable with it.
” Sometimes paying tax in the country is very painful because Ghanaians don’t see what their taxes are been used for as compared to the Western countries that show physical evidence of the taxes they pay and such strategies must be adopted to prove that taxes collected by the government are been used appropriately”
Meanwhile, a 2024 Pre-Budget Survey by auditing and accounting firm, KPMG and the United Nations Development Programme has revealed that the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy) and COVID-19 Levy are among the top five taxes killing businesses.
The respondents of the survey felt the current tax environment was adversely impacting their businesses.
Indeed, they identified several taxes, including the E-levy (76%), COVID-19 Levy (68%), Import Tariffs (68%), Petroleum Levy (62%), and growth and sustainability levy (51%), as areas where modifications could potentially alleviate the burdens faced by businesses.
Respondents also proffered the following top three recommendations, aimed at augmenting tax revenues and fostering fiscal savings.
