A 60-year-old staff member of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) at Mamponteng has allegedly drowned in River Abena Feam at Abira, a community in the Kwabre East Municipality of the Ashanti Region.
The deceased, identified as Kwame Obeng, was discovered on Wednesday morning. The exact cause of death is yet to be established.
According to the Chief Linguist of Abira, Nana Adu Adjei, Mr. Obeng had been recovering from a stroke prior to the incident. He explained that the day before his body was found, the deceased told his wife he was heading to the nearby Krobo community but failed to return home.
Mr. Obeng, a former Assembly Member for Abira, was married and had one daughter. The Chief noted that this is the second time a body has been discovered in the river.
Nana Adjei also advised residents, particularly the youth, to refrain from visiting the river on Tuesdays, which is considered a sacred day in the community.
Police from Antoa later retrieved the body and conveyed it to the mortuary for autopsy.
