Activist Critical Of Kremlin Severely Injured In Moscow

A journalist and activist critical of the Kremlin has been seriously injured in an attack in Moscow, radio station Ekho Moskvy reported Monday.
Yegor Zhukov, 22, was taken to hospital with lacerations in his face and a suspected brain injury.

Zhukov, a well-known blogger in Russia, has worked for Ekho Moskvy since he was banned by the state from having his own video channel online.

His broadcasts drew in a high number of viewers. He interviewed Russian dissident Alexei Navalny, who is currently being treated at a Berlin hospital for suspected poisoning.

Zhukov’s team published pictures of his injuries on social media. They say he was beaten in the head after he was lying on the ground.

According to Ekho Moskvy’s editor-in-chief Alexei Venediktov, Zhukov filed a complaint with the police. Two unknown men allegedly ambushed him outside his apartment on Sunday and beat him.

Zhukov is a fierce critic of Vladimir Putin and once said he wanted to be president himself.
He became well-known through his involvement in opposition protests.

He was handed a three-year suspended sentence and banned from running his own website for two years by a Moscow court in December last year. He joined Ekho Moskvy afterwards.
