The Upper East Regional Police Command has re-arrested a 20-year-old suspected armed robber, Muntari Munumi, and retrieved an M16 A2 assault rifle, three rounds of live ammunition and five spent shells at Sapeliga in the Upper East Region.
According to a police press release dated October 22, 2026, preliminary investigations indicate that two victims, whose names have been withheld, were attacked at Sapeliga Junction, Kobore, while returning home from Bazua after work.
The suspect allegedly robbed the victims of a Royal motorbike, three mobile phones and GH¢1,820 in cash.
However, the victims reportedly fought back during the attack and managed to seize the weapon from the suspect after he fired several shots but missed his target.
The victims subsequently contacted the Googo Neighbourhood Watch Committee, which mobilised and arrested the suspect before handing him over to the police, together with the recovered weapon.
The police said the suspect later disclosed the identities of his alleged accomplices and the source of the weapon used in his operations. He reportedly volunteered to lead a police team to arrest them.
However, while being transported to assist the police, the suspect complained of dizziness and suddenly collapsed.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. His body has since been deposited at the morgue for preservation and autopsy.
The Upper East Regional Police Command said efforts were underway to arrest the alleged accomplices and bring them to justice.
The Command commended the victims, the Googo Neighbourhood Watch Committee and the Chief of Sapeliga for their support and cooperation.
The statement was signed by Chief Inspector Abdul-Raman Sumaila of the Ghana Police Service’s Public Affairs Unit in the Upper East Region.
