Calls for stronger disciplinary measures in Ghana’s educational system have intensified following the incident at Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS).

The incident has renewed discussions about student protection, teacher responsibility and the need to maintain discipline in schools.

Speaking on Plan B FM’s EBAANOSEN programme, hosted by Ohene Kinnah, a New Patriotic Party (NPP) member, Richard Anning, said parents send their children to school to acquire knowledge and build a better future, making it imperative for teachers to prioritise their welfare and development.

He stressed that teachers are regarded as parents within the school environment and must conduct themselves responsibly to safeguard students and their future.

Mr Anning observed that such incidents were uncommon in the past and called for measures to address concerns surrounding discipline in the education sector.

He also urged the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) government to introduce appropriate disciplinary measures to restore order in schools.

According to him, maintaining discipline among students has become increasingly challenging, with teachers finding it difficult to correct misconduct compared with previous years.

His comments add to the ongoing public debate about accountability, student welfare and the need to uphold appropriate standards of conduct in Ghana’s educational institutions
