Private legal practitioner and IMANI Africa Vice President Kofi Bentil has criticised the state’s handling of sexual misconduct allegations against Zakaria Abdulai, the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS), questioning what he describes as selective application of the law.
In a post on his official Facebook page, Bentil drew a comparison between the reported treatment of a nursing mother arrested and detained over suspected links to a person who allegedly insulted the President and the handling of allegations against the school headmaster.
He argued that the contrast raises concerns about fairness and accountability in Ghana’s justice system.
“The state system that fished out a nursing mother, arrested and detained her for weeks on the suspicion that she was a friend of an unidentified person who insulted the President, has decided that it is ok to let a Party man relax in his house after credible accusations by over a dozen girls of rape,” Bentil wrote.
He further accused the system of favouring the powerful at the expense of vulnerable citizens, expressing frustration over what he considers an unequal application of the law.
“The law is really an ass. The powerful ride it to trample the weak,” he added.
The comments come amid public concern over the allegations involving the Obuasi SHTS headmaster and calls for accountability in the handling of the case.
Bentil’s remarks have added to demands for the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Education Service (GES) to ensure a thorough, transparent and impartial investigation.
The allegations against Abdulai require investigation by the relevant authorities, with the facts established through due process.
