Child Rights International calls for independent school child protection authority

Child Rights International calls for independent school child protection authority

Child Rights International has called for the establishment of an independent school child protection authority following allegations of abuse involving more than 19 female students at Obuasi Senior High Technical School.

The organisation’s Executive Director, Bright Appiah, is also advocating the deployment of independent school counsellors and social welfare officers to strengthen child protection and support systems in educational institutions.

He further called for a review of the Ghana Education Service (GES) Code of Conduct to ensure effective measures are in place to protect students and address allegations of abuse.

The proposals, according to the organisation’s concerns, underscore the need for stronger safeguards within schools to ensure students can report abuse and access appropriate support.

The allegations involving the students at Obuasi Senior High Technical School have renewed attention on child safety, accountability and the effectiveness of existing protection mechanisms in Ghana’s educational system.
