A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Kpone Katamanso Constituency, Samuel Aborbi, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to dismiss the Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, accusing him of lacking the requisite knowledge and competence to lead the sector.
Speaking on Plan B FM’s Nkosuo Nsem, hosted by Kofi Sekyi, Mr. Aborbi said he was surprised when President Mahama appointed Mr. Adams to the position, insisting that he had doubts about his suitability for the role from the outset.
“I was surprised when President Mahama appointed Kofi Adams as Sports Minister. I knew he was not cut out for the job, and I knew he was going to fail because he had no knowledge of sports,” he said.
His comments follow allegations by the Ranking Member of Parliament’s Sports Committee, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, who, at a press conference in Parliament on Wednesday, October 7, alleged that some officials had facilitated visa applications for individuals who were not employees of the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.
Mr. Assafuah claimed that a cover letter had been prepared to present the individuals as ministry staff to assist them in securing visas. The Minority has also called for the dismissal and prosecution of the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) over alleged involvement in the arrangements.
Reacting to the controversy, Mr. Aborbi said he and other party members were calling for Mr. Adams’ removal, arguing that the minister had disappointed party faithful.
He further accused the Sports Minister of failing to prioritise NDC supporters in arrangements for individuals expected to travel to watch the World Cup, claiming that people who were not party members had been given preference.
Mr. Aborbi maintained that the NDC did not support corruption and urged government appointees to prioritise the interests of party faithful while discharging their responsibilities.
He said the controversy had raised concerns about the minister’s leadership and called on President Mahama to take decisive action.
