Ignore Propaganda; Military Still At Ghana’s Borders After Voters Registration – GAF

The General Officer Command(GOC) Southern Command, Ghana Armed Forces(GAF) Brigadier-General Abraham Yeboah Nsiah has revealed that military operations on Ghana’s borders will not end anytime soon due to the activities carried out by terrorist in the West African sub-region.

He’s confident that the constant presence of the military will prevent terrorists from entering the country to cause mayhem.

Addressing the media after an inspection tour and interaction with military personnel deployed on the Ghana-Togo Border in the Ketu-South Municipality of the Volta Region, Brigadier-General Abraham Yeboah Nsiah urged the public to disregard reports that the military returned to barrack soon after the voters’ registration exercise ended.

“You hear that soldiers have been withdrawn since the registration exercise completed… it’s completely false. It is probably propaganda to satisfy some political expedience but we are not going to be distracted by those negative propaganda. We remain focus, committed to the security of this country.

“For now, we feel the need because there is accelerated terrorist activity with the sub-region we have to secure the border to ensure that no terrorist slips through any of the unauthorized routes. So depending on the security situation within the sub-region if we can confidently access that terrorist activity has slowed down then we can also scale down. But we are not going to withdraw completely we are going to be here for as long as the security need calls for.”

The presence of the Military especially in Ketu South (stronghold of the opposition NDC party) ahead of the voters registration exercise became a subject of controversy as party officials viewed it as a ploy by the government to intimidate the residence and stop them from registering their names to vote in the December 7 general election.

However, the government maintained that the move is meant to enforce the closure of the border as part of measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and also prevent terrorist activities in Ghana.
