15 arrested over alleged sandwinning on Accra-Kumasi Expressway

15 arrested over alleged sandwinning on Accra-Kumasi Expressway

National Security personnel in the Ashanti Region have clamped down on 15 individuals who were allegedly involved in sandwinning activities on the Accra-Kumasi Expressway project.

The operation has also led to six trucks being impounded including a wheel loader and other machines that were being used in the activities.

The arrested individuals, who were picked up at the Sewua–Donyina–Appiadu enclave during a swoop by some officers, have been transported to Accra for further questioning, according to National Security personnel who confirmed the development to Citi News.

A viral video indicated that the individuals had been excavating and removing white sand from the Accra–Kumasi Expressway for commercial purposes.

The officers have vowed to go after other suspects who remain at large and are said to be connected to the activities.

Bosomtwe District Chief Executive, Ing. Abdullah Hamidu, in an interview with Citi News, confirmed the development and denied that the Assembly was not informed about the activity after an opinion leader at Sewua-Ayoum handed over the land to the sandwinners.

He said the Assembly has called an emergency meeting with the chiefs and Assembly Members in the area as part of efforts to prevent further destruction to the environment and a threat to the Expressway project.

The Ashanti Regional Security Council is also due to meet on the matter and look at how to sustain surveillance on the stretch to nip some of these activities in the bud.
