Thomas Ayertey defends government’s free SHS Food Supply

Food Shortage In SHS: Affected Schools Expected To Receive Full Supplies By Tuesday – MOE

A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Thomas Ayertey, has defended the government’s efforts to improve food supplies under the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) programme.

Speaking on Plan B FM’s EBAANOSEN, hosted by Ohene Kinnah, Mr. Ayertey said the government is working to address challenges affecting the supply of food to Senior High Schools across the country.

According to him, the outstanding debt associated with the Free SHS food supply was accumulated during the 2024/2025 academic year under the previous NPP administration and has consequently become the responsibility of the current government because governance is a continuous process.

He expressed confidence that the government of President John Mahama will clear the outstanding debt, stressing that steps are already being taken to resolve the issue.

Mr. Ayertey also compared the implementation of the Free SHS programme under the NPP and NDC administrations, alleging that students experienced difficulties with food portions during the previous administration.

He claimed that at the time, some students were allegedly required to share one sardine among ten students, citing it as an example of the challenges that affected the feeding programme.

He therefore appealed to caterers and other individuals responsible for preparing meals in Senior High Schools to remain patient as the government works to address the outstanding challenges.

Mr. Ayertey maintained that the NDC administration is committed to improving the implementation of the Free SHS programme and ensuring that students receive the necessary support.
