Chelsea have continued their ruthless streak in the summer transfer window after completing a free transfer for Brazilian veteran Thiago Silva.
The 35-year-old has joined up with Frank Lampard’s side on a one-year contract after leaving Paris Saint-Germain following their Champions League final heartbreak – becoming Chelsea’s fifth arrival of the summer.
After completing moves for Timo Werner (£53m), Hakim Ziyech (£38m), Ben Chilwell (£50m) and Malang Sarr (free), the Blues have decided to add a wealth of experience to their defensive ranks.
Silva completed his medical on Thursday and is expected to slot straight into the heart of defence, which was a troublesome position for Lampard’s young side last campaign.
Following his arrival, Silva told the club’s official website: ‘I am so happy to be joining Chelsea.
‘I am delighted to be a part of Frank Lampard’s exciting squad for next season and I’m here to challenge for honours. See you soon Chelsea fans, I look forward to playing at Stamford Bridge very soon.’
After leaving PSG following a splendid eight years at the club, Silva paid an emotional tribute to the Ligue 1 giants.
Silva wrote on social media: ”The value of things is not in the time they last, but in the intensity with which they occur. For this reason, there are unforgettable moments, inexplicable things and incomparable people’.’
