The Ministry of Sports and Recreation and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) have agreed on a number of measures aimed at addressing concerns over the performance of Ghana’s national teams and strengthening football development in the country.

The decisions were reached at a meeting between the Ministry and the GFA on Thursday, October 2, 2026, following growing concerns over the declining performance of Ghana’s national football teams.

As part of the measures, a five-member Technical Search Committee will be constituted to scout and recommend a new head coach for the Black Stars.

The committee is expected to submit its report by Friday, October 9, 2026.

The Ministry said the meeting also agreed to appoint a technical head to coordinate the development pathways for the U15, U17 and U20 national teams, with each team expected to have a dedicated technical team, appropriate competition structures and player progression systems.

The U18 and U19 competitions will also be placed on hold after the completion of ongoing competitions at those levels, as part of efforts to transition to the agreed youth development structure.

Under the new arrangements, the Black Stars head coach will be required to reside in Ghana and regularly monitor the domestic league.

The Ministry and the GFA also agreed to strengthen domestic player development through consistent monitoring and scouting of local leagues to create a larger pool of talent for selection to the senior national team.

In addition, the GFA Technical Directorate will collaborate with the National Schools and Grassroots Sports programme and football academies to strengthen league development and player progression.

A Public Interest Committee will also be established by the GFA in collaboration with the Ministry to supervise and coordinate the implementation of the agreed reforms.

The meeting further discussed the relocation of the technical hub to the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence at Prampram.

On national team management, the Ministry and the GFA proposed reducing the membership of each team’s management committee from five members to three, with further discussions expected to determine the final structure, responsibilities and expenditure arrangements.

The two sides also agreed to work towards signing a FIFA-standard cooperation agreement to formalise their respective responsibilities and provide a framework for implementing the reforms.

The Ministry said the measures form part of continuing efforts to establish a clear roadmap for strengthening Ghanaian football, adding that it would maintain dialogue with the GFA and relevant stakeholders while monitoring implementation and providing updates on progress.

The Ministry acknowledged concerns from Ghanaians over the performance of the national teams and said the public’s support for Ghanaian football must be matched by sustained institutional action to restore confidence and improve performance.
