Mr. Agbemor Kwame Aheto, an aspiring Communication Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ashaiman Constituency, has defended President John Dramani Mahama amid ongoing discussions over the teaching and learning of Arabic and Chinese in Ghanaian schools.
Speaking on Plan B FM’s Ebaanosen Show, Mr. Aheto said President Mahama’s comments on the issue should be understood as a suggestion rather than an approved government policy.
He explained that any proposal to introduce new subjects into the school curriculum would have to go through the appropriate processes before becoming official government policy.
His comments come amid public debate over the issue after President Mahama clarified on September 12 that Cabinet had not approved any policy to introduce Arabic and Chinese across all public schools. The President urged the public to disregard reports suggesting that the two languages had been approved for nationwide implementation.
Mr. Aheto argued that President Mahama’s remarks were not intended to undermine or disrespect the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu.
According to him, some individuals were deliberately holding on to the issue in an attempt to portray the President negatively.
He cited President Mahama’s earlier comments about robotics as an example, saying the President had previously spoken about the importance of robotics even before its implementation, yet the idea was welcomed by some people.
Mr. Aheto also commended the Education Minister for initiatives aimed at improving the quality of food served to students in senior high schools.
He said some of the meals previously served to students were below acceptable standards but maintained that the current administration was making efforts to improve the quality of food provided to students.
The NDC Communication Officer aspirant further acknowledged that the Education Minister could not resolve all challenges surrounding the Free Senior High School programme within a short period.
He, however, maintained that the Minister was doing his best to address the needs of students and improve the country’s education system.
