A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Charlotte Eyiram, has called on the government and the Ministry of Education to introduce a uniform prospectus for all Senior High Schools (SHSs) across the country.
According to her, differences in prospectus requirements among schools have created an unnecessary financial burden for parents, with some schools demanding expensive items from newly admitted students.
Speaking on Plan B FM’s Nkosuo Nsem programme hosted by Kofi Sekyi, Madam Eyiram said the situation has allowed some school authorities to take advantage of parents by prescribing items she believes are either too costly or unnecessary for fresh SHS students.
Her comments follow concerns raised by the Member of Parliament for South Dayi and Majority Chief Whip, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, over the extensive nature of SHS prospectus requirements.
In a post on X, the MP questioned whether newly admitted students genuinely needed to provide all the items listed in their school prospectuses when reporting as first-year students.
He also described the prospectus as “huge and heavily laden” and called for a review of the list of items required from students.
According to Mr. Dafeamekpor, the compulsory nature of the extensive prospectus has become a major concern for parents because of the financial burden involved.
Commenting on the issue, Charlotte Eyiram said the time had come for the government and the Ministry of Education to review the prospectus requirements and develop a standard list of items for all SHSs.
She believes a uniform prospectus would help ensure fairness, prevent unnecessary demands on parents and reduce the financial pressure associated with preparing children for senior high school.
