The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have assured the public that existing approved public transport fares remain unchanged as consultations on a possible fare review continue.
In a joint statement dated Tuesday, September 8, the transport operators said no decision has been taken to increase fares, despite an earlier proposal presented to the Ministry of Transport for an upward adjustment.
The two unions began consultations with the Ministry of Transport on Tuesday, as part of the review of public transport fares for the 2026 fare window.
Following the engagement, a team comprising representatives from the Ministry of Transport, the GPRTU and the GRTCC has been constituted to review the various cost inputs before any decision is taken.
The unions say the exercise is intended to ensure that any eventual adjustment is fair and takes into account the interests of both transport operators and the travelling public. They added that the outcome of the review will be communicated to the public once the process is completed.
In the meantime, the GPRTU and GRTCC have directed their members, including drivers, station masters and transport owners, to continue charging the current approved fares across the country until further notice**.
They also appealed to passengers and transport operators to remain calm and cooperative while the review process continues.
