The Accra High Court has adjourned to 15 October 2026 the bail application pending appeal filed by former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

Wontumi’s lawyers were expected to move the application on Wednesday, August 19, but both lead counsel, Samuel Atta Akyea, and his client were absent in court.

The NPP’s Director of Legal Affairs, Gary Nimako, was present on the party’s behalf.

The court clerk informed the parties that the trial judge was not sitting this week due to her unavailability, prompting the adjournment.

Deputy Attorney-General Justice Srem-Sai was present for the state.

Wontumi is currently serving a 20-year jail term after the Accra High Court convicted him on illegal mining-related offences connected to a concession at Samreboi in the Western Region.

His lawyers filed the bail application in August, seeking his release while his appeal against the conviction and sentence is heard, but the Attorney-General has opposed the application, describing Wontumi as a flight risk.

The court is now expected to consider the bail application when the case resumes on 15 October.
