Politicians must explain government spending to the people

A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Thomas Ayertey, has called on politicians to provide clear explanations to the public on government spending and decisions, particularly when large amounts of public funds are involved.

Speaking on Plan B FM’s EBAANOSEN, hosted by Ohene Kennah, Thomas Ayertey said politicians have a responsibility to properly explain government policies, programmes and expenditure to their constituents rather than expecting citizens to accept decisions without adequate explanations.

He noted that whenever government spends significant amounts of public money, citizens deserve to know how the funds were used and the reasons behind the expenditure.

According to him, attempts by politicians to sugarcoat issues involving public funds could undermine transparency and accountability, stressing that citizens have the right to demand clear and satisfactory explanations from those entrusted with managing the country’s resources.

Thomas Ayertey further urged Members of Parliament and other political leaders to regularly engage their constituents and explain government decisions in a manner that ordinary citizens can easily understand.

He stressed that effective communication and transparency are essential to building public confidence and ensuring accountability in the management of the country’s resources.
