A Ghanaian national evacuated from South Africa has died shortly after arriving at the Accra International Airport as part of the government’s ongoing evacuation exercise.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement issued on Friday, August 14, 2026, said the deceased was among 50 Ghanaians who arrived in the country at 5:50 p.m. aboard an Air Tanzania flight from South Africa.
According to the Ministry, the passenger’s health condition began to deteriorate about 30 minutes before the aircraft touched down in Accra.
A medical emergency team stationed at the airport attended to the passenger immediately after arrival and made efforts to save his life.
However, the attempts were unsuccessful, and doctors confirmed the passenger’s death at 6:55 p.m.
The Ministry said it is undertaking the necessary formalities to inform the deceased’s family and has arranged for the remains to be deposited at the Police Hospital for an autopsy.
It said further information on the circumstances surrounding the death would be provided after formal engagement with the bereaved family.
The deceased was among Ghanaians returning home amid the government-led evacuation exercise from South Africa, which followed renewed xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals, including Ghanaians.
The Ministry expressed its deep sadness over the death and said it would provide an update on the development after engaging with the bereaved family.
