The Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MEST), with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Ghana, has inaugurated the National Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Steering Committee under the Global Environment Facility (GEF)-funded project, “Enabling Activities to Support the Ratification of the BBNJ Agreement.”
The initiative is aimed at supporting the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction while enhancing Ghana’s capacity and readiness to implement the BBNJ Agreement.
The newly inaugurated Steering Committee will provide strategic direction, coordination and oversight to ensure the effective implementation of the project. It will also play a critical role in guiding Ghana’s preparations towards ratifying and implementing the BBNJ Agreement, while advancing national efforts to protect and sustainably manage marine biodiversity.
Speaking at the inauguration, officials highlighted the importance of strengthening institutional coordination to safeguard marine ecosystems and promote the sustainable use of ocean resources for future generations.
The initiative underscores Ghana’s commitment to international cooperation on ocean governance and reinforces the country’s efforts to advance marine conservation, protect biodiversity beyond national boundaries, and promote the growth of a sustainable blue economy.
