The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced the successful repatriation of the mortal remains of Bashiru Isak, the Ghanaian national who was killed in South Africa in an incident linked to the recent wave of xenophobic attacks.
In a statement issued on July 16, 2026, the Ministry confirmed that Mr. Isak, a father of three, was fatally shot multiple times in Khayelitsha, a suburb of Cape Town. It noted that his identity had now been conclusively established, dismissing earlier claims by some South African officials that sought to dispute the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to the Ministry, with the consent of the bereaved family, the Government of Ghana, through its High Commission in Pretoria, facilitated the repatriation of Mr. Isak’s body, which arrived at the Kotoka International Airport on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at 6:40 p.m.
Senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and members of the deceased’s family received the body upon arrival before it was transferred to the 37 Military Hospital mortuary.
The Ministry disclosed that the Government and the family have agreed to conduct an independent autopsy after unsuccessful attempts by Ghana’s High Commission in Pretoria and the family to obtain an official autopsy report from South African authorities.
The Government has renewed its call for swift investigations into the killing, insisting that those responsible must be arrested and prosecuted.
“We expect expedited investigations, arrests and prosecution. There must be no room for silence or cover-ups in the gruesome killing of Mr. Isak,” the Ministry stated.
Following the independent autopsy, Mr. Bashiru Isak will be laid to rest in accordance with Islamic customs.
The Ministry reiterated Ghana’s commitment to pursuing all appropriate diplomatic and legal avenues to ensure justice is served, while extending its deepest condolences to the late Bashiru Isak’s parents, wife, children, relatives, friends, and loved ones.
