Vice President calls on church to champion national transformation

Deal with galamsey, not innocent protesters – Naana Opoku-Agyeman

Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has called on churches in Ghana to reposition themselves to play a more impactful role in national development by promoting faith, education, ethical leadership, and social renewal.

Delivering the 90th Anniversary Lecture of Accra Ridge Church on the theme, “Repositioning the Church for National Transformation: Faith, Education and Holistic Renewal in Ghana,” the Vice President commended the church for nine decades of worship, service, and meaningful contributions to Ghana’s development.

She highlighted the historic role of faith-based organisations in establishing schools, hospitals, and social welfare systems long before many state institutions existed, noting that the Church remains a vital partner in national development.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang urged the Church to continue working alongside government and other public institutions, particularly in underserved communities, through quality education, healthcare delivery, youth empowerment, prison ministry, rehabilitation programmes, and support for vulnerable groups.

The Vice President also stressed that the Church must remain the moral conscience of society by speaking out consistently against corruption, injustice, abuse, environmental degradation, and the erosion of public trust, irrespective of which political party is in government.

She further underscored the importance of peaceful coexistence among Christians, Muslims, traditional believers, and people of all faiths, describing religious harmony as one of Ghana’s greatest strengths and a cornerstone of national stability.

According to her, the Church must preserve its core values while adapting to address emerging challenges such as youth unemployment, mental health concerns, environmental issues, declining ethical standards, and weakening social responsibility.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang congratulated Accra Ridge Church on reaching its 90th anniversary and encouraged the congregation to deepen its partnership with government and society in building stronger institutions, supporting vulnerable communities, and advancing a peaceful, prosperous, and morally grounded Ghana.
