Former Nigeria captain John Obi Mikel has attributed the Super Eagles’ inability to win the FIFA World Cup to corruption within the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
Speaking on a podcast with former England striker Peter Crouch, Mikel said Nigeria’s football administration has consistently failed to provide players and youth teams with the basic support needed to compete at the highest level.
“Nigeria can’t win the World Cup, let’s forget about it, until we fix the corruption in the NFF,” Mikel said.
The former Chelsea midfielder also highlighted poor welfare conditions, revealing that despite Nigeria being one of Africa’s richest countries, players have had to endure substandard arrangements.
“We’re one of the richest countries in Africa, yet Alex Iwobi was sharing a bed with a teammate, and our youth teams don’t even have proper facilities,” he added.
Mikel’s comments have reignited debate over governance and investment in Nigerian football, with many calling for reforms to unlock the country’s immense football potential.
